Last Journey

 Last Journey

I am sitting inside the Duaripara cemetery. It's about three o'clock at night. There are two dead bodies in front of me. One is a Hindu dead body, the other is Muslim. I wish I could smoke in this extreme cold. As I am inside the graveyard, that’s why I am sitting quietly thinking that it should not be right.

Today can be called 'Hurly-burly Day'! Jaya's father died in the morning, Jaya lives on the road next to us. Jaya Chakraborty, her father Subir Chakraborty. Very friendly man. I had heard around 12 PM that Mitu's father should have to be taken to the hospital. Me with all my friends took him to the Heart Foundation. There was no outcome. He already had cancer. Mitu's father used to smoke two packs of cigarettes every day. I can't remember uncle's name. We all live in the vicinity, some in Rupnagar, some in Eastern Housing, some in Pallabi, some in Duaripara - but everyone is gathered today for this. As we all went to the same school while we were kid, living in the same area, we have been running around on the day of danger of two friends.

(3)

"Sajib, take the cigarette!" Ashiqul pulled the cigarette with two puffs and gave it towards me. Nah, there are no elders around, this chance can be taken. If something like this can decrease the terrible cold of the month of December! Faisal, Raju, Jony, Sumon, Sobuj, Anik, Ananta, Lawrence, Ashiqul are sitting nearby. Everyone is busy discussing politics without any concern about dead bodies. It doesn't seem by anyone's style of speaking that there's an issue of mourning here. Everyone is busy arguing about who will be the next Prime Minister between Hasina and Khaleda. Suddenly there was a sound of gunfire outside the walls. Sobuj and Lawrence bowed their heads. I assured, “The walls of this cemetery are about 6 feet high. No problem.”

A while ago, the procession of Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal came face to face outside, then the chase, counter-chase started. Immediately after that, two Army patrol vehicles appeared. They stopped several of us. It was not explainable to the Army captain at all that we were carrying dead bodies. I was not in the procession, because the first few of us went inside to see how far the tomb had been dug, so we did not get caught in the Army raid.

Then I looked out slightly over the wall of the cemetery. We have a friend from Duaripara, Tareq, he and his two younger brothers Rashed and Saikat got beaten by the Army. As much as he was saying, “Bro, I am a journalist, my name is Tareq bin Firoz. Look at my ID card.” He was being beaten more and more. While leaving Rupnagar with the dead bodies, I saw Sohail Bhai of Chhatra League and John Bhai of BNP. None of the leaders were there. Those who started the fight - they all disappeared immediately; but who were in the corpse procession, almost all of them were dragged into the car. Everyone, especially young people, was arrested. Several of the elders went behind the Army vehicle, to release them.

It did not occur in anyone’s brain to run away leaving two dead-bodies behind, or the Army could arrest after seeing two dead bodies. Mitu and Jaya both are staying at home, as it is said, visiting graveyards is forbidden for the girls.

(5)

Dead bodies remained on the road after the Army had taken everyone away. When I became sure there was no one; then all of us who were inside the graveyard, and the gravediggers went outside and brought the two dead bodies inside. Grave diggers went out to smoke. We have no news about the priest. The whole cemetery is empty, just us.

(6)

All of this happened half an hour ago. Now again the sudden sound of gunshot.

"How long are we going to sit here?" Lawrence asked. Jony assured, "Tomorrow is Election day! It's safe to be inside now. "

Tomorrow, December 29, 2008, the National Parliament election is going to be held. Actually not tomorrow. Voting will start from 8 am. There are only 5 hours left. The Caretaker Government has been in power for two consecutive years. They will leave office through the election tomorrow. Their interest for a fair election is noticeable.

Lawrence objected, “My house is at Goalchakkar. It's hard to go back so far.” Raju replied, "No one has anything to do over people's death, no one understood that two uncles would die on the same day.”

I looked around. Jaya's father has been kept inside the burning wood. A little far on, Mitu's father has been wrapped with a shroud and laid on the khatiya. There are only two cemeteries in Bangladesh where people of all faiths make their 'last journey', one of which is the Duaripara cemetery - where Hindus are cremated and Muslims - Christians are buried. The last rites of the Buddhists are also performed here. The second such place in Bangladesh is Kamalganj in Moulvibazar.

I looked at my friends again, as everyone is so pale. It is half past three in the morning. Everyone's mood is fading after hearing the gunshot. There is no guarantee of how long others will return after the Army interrogation. Suddenly an interesting idea flashed in my head. How is it, if the corpses are switched?

(7)

Even if someone shot entering into the graveyard, no one would be shocked like this. Everyone was shocked to hear my proposal. Then Sabuj suddenly laughed, then everyone started laughing one after one. There was laughter for a while.

Jony started talking first, "There's a chance that we'll get caught." Faisal became seriously annoyed after hearing Jony's comment, "It seemed to me that you would say yes if you didn't have a chance to get caught. Sajib has gone completely crazy.”

“But how do we do it? Won't everyone see?” Ashikul's question. Sumon replied, “Oh no! Everyone is very tired all day. They will be busy burying and cremating. There will be no time to see all this. ”

“We can stick dead-boy with a lot of shroud rope before. No one will be given a chance to see the dead body.” The idea of Sabuj is not bad. Jony added, "We will keep Uncle's dead body inside the wood for cremation. Just after their arrival, we rush to action! ”

Only Faisal looks like he is suddenly in a deep shit. He tried to prohibit all of us with a low voice, everyone stopped him with threats.

Raju said, "Everyone can see in the light." “We will impair the light after finishing the work.” Anik's immediate solution.

Faisal tried to say again, "It will be a sin!" Sumon replied, "When you were smoking sitting on the wall of the grave, wasn't it sin?" Raju added, “And this graveyard was built with this great purpose so that everyone would understand that after death everyone is the same dead; Everyone goes beyond suffering, sorrow, love.” He paused and said, “There are only two such cemeteries in Bangladesh. One in Mirpur, Dhaka, the other in Kamalganj, Moulvibazar. We are spearheading the whole project. ”

"But nothing like the corpse exchange has ever happened." Faisal replied. "So what?" There is always a thing called ‘first time’. And how do we know if someone else did? Maybe no one discussed it outside.” Lawrence's answer.

Ananta said, “In our Hindu religion, corpses are both cremated and buried. Although Chakraborty's body is cremated, the Mahabharat will not be impure even in burial.” This time Sabuj said to Faisal, “Look around. The corpses of many are just fenced by bamboo coating. Many are fitting tiles. The rich guys could not leave the rich mentality even after their death.”

“Those who are normally buried here, the administration buries someone else in that specific place after 10 years for the land crisis. The local government service charge is only two thousands. And if you want to buy the land permanently, you have to pay a separate price of one million. I saw one grave designed with marble stones. About more than three million have been spent there.” Ashikul said.

“Yes, that's it. After the death of a Muslim, one should wonder how to go to heaven escaping punishment. No, many keep the land ready for their own dead body before their death. They bequeath to decorate grave with tiles and marble stones for pomp. They die with the pride of money in my mind.” Jony added.

Lawrence was silent for so long, now he said, “There will be no problem in our Christianity either. Then let's start work without delay. ”

I haven't said a word in whole time. I just sparked the idea and waited to see what the public had to say!

(8)

It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Does a person gain weight when he or she dies? First we removed the wood and unloaded the body of Jaya’s father. Extremely heavy mango wood. Usually the rule is to burn the wood of sandalwood. Not everyone can afford it, so a dead body is burned with mango wood, a small piece of sandalwood wood is placed on top.

We first separated Mitu's father's body from the shroud cloth. We had to remember how the shroud and ribbon were tied. We grabbed Mitu's father, took him from the khatiya and laid him on the wood. Then we covered the body with wood. We also covered his face so that no one can see him.

Then the body of Jaya’s father was wrapped in the shroud. There were many ribbons, with which we wrapped the whole body well, including the side of the face, and placed it on the khatiya. At that time, Raju gave us an intelligent idea, “Many people may come and cry and may want to see the dead body, better we put it down in the grave. We keep the mat and bamboo ready.” Everyone agreed. The Raju boy is really smart, but he is slowly losing hair of his head - that’s the problem.

Sabuj, Ashiqul and Lawrence went down to the grave and laid the body perfectly. I looked at the clock and saw that it was about quarter to four. Everyone is sweating very much. Raju is very tall, he wrapped a handkerchief, opened the bulb, took it in his other hand and canker it with a light twist. Then he placed it again in the holder as before. The light is no longer working.

(9)

We were lucky that no one came during our operation. Then we took several walks in the dark. I smoked a few rounds of cigarettes. Suddenly at five o'clock there was the sound of two heavy vehicles slowing down, then everyone started rushing in. Everyone has returned from Mirpur Cantonment.

We asked everyone how they were doing. At once everyone started talking. What I understood was that they were kept in the Army camp, not in the Mirpur cantonment. Their office is now in the community center of the City Corporation in the civilian area. The one who took was a Captain, unable to catch the corpse issue in the dark of night. Later, a colonel came and immediately released them and ordered own men to drop everyone by the car. Everyone is very upset and tired. Almost everyone is back, but just Tarek and his two younger brothers. Probably the factor is, they're beaten so poorly.

I thought to myself, "This is an opportunity." Jony asked, "Then let's finish quickly?" Everyone answered in one sentence, "Yes, yes, let's start." Ananta asked where the priest was. Immediately the priest appeared. He has just arrived.

The priest became annoyed when he tried to turn on the light, "Brother, no one turns off the torch of the mobile phone. Light fused. I am reciting mantras. Where are his family members?”

What we feared did not happen. Five minutes after the cheetah was set on fire, someone from the crowd said, "Then let's all bury the body." We informed that we have everything ready to proceed. Khair uncle said, "You are doing very well, sons. You worked hard all day. We will not give you pain anymore. Let's start work.” Before he could finish speaking; Sumon, Sabuj, Anik quickly went down to the grave and started covering the dead body with bamboo and mats. I noticed Azad uncle in the dim darkness. He said, "Throw, everyone throw soil." Everyone sprinkled a handful of soil on Chakraborty's uncle's grave.

Someone from the crowd asked, "Where are the gravediggers?" Ashiqul replied, “They went home as you are late. But there is a spade. We are covering it with soil. ”

It took about twenty minutes to decorate the grave with soil. Then Azad's uncle said, "Come, everyone and recite Surah Fatiha once, and Surah Ikhlas three times." After all the Muslims finishing recitation the Surah, he started praying. I have never been to Duaripara cemetery before. I noticed in amazement that he was praying for everyone, not just for the one who died today. Even he prayed for the peace of the souls of Hindus, Buddhists, Christians who have been buried or cremated in this graveyard. He did not say ‘Muslim Community’ or anything like that for once. I heard in my own ears that he was pleading for 'all the people of the world' to live in peace. After hearing Faisal's lecture, there was a slight sense of guilt for switching dead bodies, but it is disappearing. I looked at Faisal, he was crying. A lot of people have tears in the eyes. More strange thing, I saw Ananta, Lawrence and other Hindus at the edge of the crowd who were present also raised their hands. I have never seen such a strange thing in my whole life. Something happened inside my head.

(10)

After a long prayer, we all made our way home. At that time two gravediggers appeared. They were criticised slightly. Mitu are total of three sisters. - Mitu, Nipa and Maliha. Since there is no brother, some of his relatives came to the graveyard. I saw a relative of Mitu, opened his wallet and paid them. He also gave tips after their demands for tips. At the last of everyone, we all were leaving. Near the gate, everyone agreed that no one will ever know today's incident. I remembered another friend Manik. He drinks a lot and also takes drugs. We survived that he left for Spain. If he were here, he would have leaked all the incidents later in a drunken state.

I approached the door and looked back. Muajjin is reciting Azan in the next mosque. A Cross was seen, there is a grave of a Christian. Tonight is a memorable night. After looking for a few seconds, I came out through the gate.
